What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? va

Uhaul rented me a truck whose fuel neck (the part where you put gas in which then connects to the tank) was so bent and mangled, I couldn't put gas in without gas spilling back out. I could put in about a quart at a time, then it would spill back out. I thought maybe there was a defective mechanism in the tank preventing gas from going in too quickly...It took 20 minutes to put in 8 gallons. I asked another gas patron to see if there was something I wasn't doing right, and he looked UNDER the gas intake area and discovered a mangled piece of metal, which he said may be constricting the gas going into the tank. I pulled over at a Burger King and called Uhaul to explain the problem. 90 minutes later, a local service guy showed up to work on the problem. The hose was so bent and flattened that he couldn't fix it. He said it probably got that way when someone changed a tire on the truck. (i.e. not me) I then spent 6 hours in the sun waiting for them to see what they could do about getting the part fixed or replaced. The part could not be fixed, it was flattened so much, so I was told I had to wait until the morning to get it fixed. After another HOUR on the phone, in the heat, Uhaual finally had me put up in a hotel until they could fix it. The truck was left with the neck OFF, allowing gas in the tank to be free to the air. I was supposed to DRIVE this to a hotel according to the service person, but Uhaul agreed it was unsafe to do so.

I feel they should NEVER have rented this truck to me, since the damage was done during a tire change prior to my renting it, and because of their negligence, any number of bad things could have occurred. Is this something to sue them over?

No, in fact you admittedly complicated the entire issue by your demanding a repair, when you could have completed the trip. By your own admission, the vehicle could be fueled. Generally speaking, you are lucky they paid for your hotel as you are the one who led to the vehicle becoming stranded enroute, not a mechanical breakdown.

" He said it probably got that way when someone changed a tire on the truck."

Emphasis on "probably".

"I feel they should NEVER have rented this truck to me, since the damage was done during a tire change prior to my renting it, and because of their negligence,"

And your evidence that 1. changing a tire caused this and 2. that the UHaul folks caused this negligence?

"any number of bad things could have occurred."

Such as what? That it would take you 20 minutes to put 8 gallons of gas in the tank?

What, exactly, do you believe you can sue for? UHaul responded to your complaint, attempted to fix it and when they couldn't, put you up in a hotel until the issue could be resolved.

IMHO OP is very lucky that U-Haul was so nice to put him up in a hotel. If I ran a rental truck business with locations everywhere I would have simply substituted the truck and saved the expense of the hotel. OP would have been moving all his possessions from the old truck to the new truck in the "hot sun."

I agree no compensation. But some of you, seriously? Have you ever driven a box truck for long distances? If it takes 20 minutes to pump 8 gallons, and with a 20 gallon capacity and a 10 MPG average on those trucks, OP would be spending 1 hour out of every 4 refueling. Imagine doing that if you going cross country. OP has every right to be upset.

Oh and Wino? It's obvious you know nothing about the rental truck business or you wouldn't have made such a patently stupid comment.

Hey, the name says it all "U-HAUL." If you don't like the first truck we give you can haul your junk into the second truck. :D
