Alabama - I was laid off from my job due to financial reasons on April 3. As part of my compensation, I was paid for my two weeks of vacation that was due me. I went the next day and applied for unemployment. I have been waiting 3 weeks for my unemployment check to come. I just received the 1st one today with a letter stating that I had been denied unemployment compensation from 4/6 to 4/19 because I was paid two weeks of vacation. My question is, why am I not eligible for compensation during this two week period? I was told that if I had not received vacation pay I would have been paid unemployment for those two weeks. It should not matter whether I received vacation pay or not. I have been unemployed and not receiving any employment benefits since the day I was let ago---a month ago. It's not like I took a two week vacation and then decided to seek unemployment. They say this is law. Are they correct? If so - why?

Yes, they are correct. The prinicipal of 'unemployment compensation' is to provide funds to help you during the period until you find another job. The vacation pay you received was funds, and is treated just as any other funds received.
