What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? CA (Los Angeles)

Hi, I'm currently receiving unemployment benefits from CA. My last job laid me off at the end of July. I have a fine I have to pay for a DUI in Los Angeles. I am going to do community labor to pay some of it off. Do I have to report this as "income" or "earnings" to CA employment development department ?

Thanks -Jay1000What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)?

I will leave the income question to another, more knowledgeable member. You will have to state in your unemployment questionairre that you did not look for work on the days you "worked your fines off."

What you need to do is right now, before you have worked it, but when you know the extent of it (weekend, one work week, etc) in other words how many days or hours of work it will be, you call the CA unemployment office and ask them this question.

You can bet that they have had this situation before come up and this question asked before. If you are working a whole week, you'll probably have to stop your claim for that time and re-open it again when your work assignment is over due to availablility issues.

If you were simply to not report this work experience or the wages made to pay back the fines, you'd probably get away with it for a while. You'd think you were home free, then much later, it will come back to bite you and you would have to pay back, or at least would be overpaid for all the unemployment you drew after this unreported situation. So call, ask those who know this elephant.

When you make this call, write down the person's name you speak with and exactly what they tell you. As I said, knowing the time interval you'll be working is the most important thing to know.
