What is the name of your state? CA

I was uninsured driving my motorcycle between the farthest right lane on a one way street and the parked cars. A driver in a parked car opened his door suddenly and I could not avoid it. I was only uninsured due to financial reasons and knew I had no recourse for the damages I incurred on my bike (a broken mirror and the brake pedal was pulled out to a 45 degree angle), however because I was uninsured the other guys insurance company is holding me accountable for his car's damages. Witnesses say that we were equally at fault. I'd like to think that his accountability would be automatic, as I know that if I opened my car door without looking and somebody ran into it I'd feel real stupid. (Maybe not as stupid as driving without insurance.) Am I automatically liable because I was not insured?
