What is the name of your state?

Massachusetts

My daughter had surgery just recently and I had to pay a rather large medical bill (what insurance didn't cover). It was brought to my attention by a friend that I could have petitioned the court to have 50% paid by dad. How does this work? Do I have to wait until there is a bill or can I go anytime and get this put in place so that way it will be already there for future bills?

It depends on what your court order states in regards to uninsured medical expenses. Most court orders do say that NCP is responsible for half however it depends on the order.

If your CO doesnt say anything about uncovered medical expenses, you may be out of luck. You may look into your states laws, though, because they sometimes specify how parents should split these bills. If not, and you would like future medical expenses covered, you could always go back to court and have it ordered. It may be too late to get the bill(s) you already have reimbursed by dad.
