I am seeking to sell merchandise such as t-shirts and coffee mugs using the customizable merchandise distribution services offered by Zazzle.com. The merchandise is all based off of original cartoon characters I've created.

Here's the rub: the non-profit cartoon series I created that features these characters uses (with permission) copyrighted music from a big-name band. The merchandise itself does not feature any intellectual property owned by the band. Just my original works.

Do I need to pay royalties to the band and/or ask their permission to sell my merchandise?

If there is no trademark (perhaps band names, song names, logos) or lyrics or whatever from the band, most likely no.
