What is the name of your state? Virginia.

My boss isn't paying me for the last two weeks of work. The problem is that I don't have any official records of the hours that I worked, and I am concerned that any legal attempt to get compensation will be hindered by this. It occurs to me, though, that many people don't keep an official record of hours that they worked, so I have a feeling that there's a way around this.

I assume that if I can procure a copy of my hours worked (I know the weeks that I worked without pay, and the amount of hours worked, but I don't know the exact times), then I should just report it to the Department of Labor. Is this correct? Do you have any advice about getting a record of hours worked from my boss, or is this even necessary?

Thanks.

You don't have to provide the DOL with a copy of your hours worked. Having a copy of your time sheet signed by your boss would be great of course but it's not necessary. All you need to do is contact the DOL, tell them the hours that you worked to the best of your recollection, and they'll investigate from there.

Very few folks in your situation are able to go to the DOL with proof in hand that they worked and didn't get paid. Don't worry about it.
