What is the name of your state?Anyone who might be following might like to know that today was five star all the way.

In home portion of the custody study was today. The evaluator seemed comfortable, pleasant, and genuinely amused at my kids. She was very complimentary about lunch, and the house. She remarked that my son who is nearly two seemed to be developmentally outstanding, especially verbally. Compliments emberass me abit and so I downplayed it all. But I am really excited, giddy that a professional critic had praise. It seemed to all go very well. we all played on the floor and had alot of fun after lunch and the kids listened to me like pro's.

I feel a little crappy though, secretly hoping that the ex's in-home doesn't go smoothly. I'm sure I'll get over that though the next time she hangs up on me.

To top it all off, I am ending my job search. I am now employed again, as of about two hours after the in-home visit. Really good interview, I start next week.

I know it isn't very legal related, but I also noted that there seems to be a shortage of cheery happy posts on this forum. Just wanted to share these little victories and the happy spirits quick while they're still warm.

Thanks all, for the help so far.

Congrats on your great day. Was it acutally the custody evaluator whom visited or an outside party? We are coming up on a home study and aren't sure what will happen. We do know it will not be the same evaluator (dr.) we met last week in his office. He told us he is not the one who does in home studies. Any thoughts?

Thanks,

I this case (in Minnesota) the study is conducted by Catholic charities. The process goes something like this.

I paid. The evaluator mailed a questionairre to myself and the ex. We were to fill this out and include references whom have observed us parenting.

The evaluator mailed different questionairres to those references. those questionairres did include questions like "Who do you think should retain custody of the child(ren)?" and is not for relatives.

The ex and I each had an hour and a half background interview with the evaluator who appears to be well trained in the psychological arts.

Then an hour interview about the kids.

Then the in-home with the same evaluator in this case. The kids were to take the evaluator on a tour of the house, and then I was expectd to prepare a meal. We all sat down to eat together with the evaluator. and then we played for awhile. Overall, the in-home took two hours.

There is to be one more in-office interview, and in this case the evaluator requested that each parent participate in a chemical dependency assessment.

After the facts are in, the evaluator makes a recommendation to the court and prepares a report for the judge. We get to read this report before continuing the court case. We may want to settle out of court since it is expected that judges will generally follow this recommendation.

The evaluator would also be in a position to request a psychological eval of one or both of us.

The number of visits and their subject of discussion as well as the format for the home visit were announced to us in a brief pamphlet at the beginning. The home visit and all the apointments were scheduled three weeks in advance.I believe the court allows the report to take up to 90 days. This should take most of that time. My last interview is in two weeks.

Don't know how similar it may be in your area, but I would imagine it to be at least vaguely similar. It does seem odd that it would be another person though. Catholic Chariities is THE third party here. don't know if it is at all useful but this is what I know about custody evaluation.

good luck
Hope all works well.
