I am married to a US citizen for 7 years. I know that I am eligible to apply for a citizenship, but before I do that I want to make sure that the process of reviewing my application go smooth. I was arrested and charged with Grand Theft. After I pled guilty I received three years of probation, which are now expired. Before I submit my application I would like to know how this might affect my status and what should I do before I proceede with the application?

Unfortunately crimes comitted by aliens never expire in the eyes of the INS. In fact, you *may* have problems renewing your 10 year residence card never mind citizenship. What I can not remember is if something like Grand Theft is counted under the 1996 law of deporting aliens when they commit crimes. Violence, sexually abuse etc are certs but not sure about your crime.

You might want to give an Immigration Attorney a call and get a few minutes consultation. Other than that, there is no harm in trying anyway.. it is not that expensive to apply.
