Virginia--During a drunken indiscretion at his bachelor party, my husband fathered a child, born last week. He has not spoken to the child's mother, except when she called from the hospital to tell him that she had just had a baby and thought he could be the father. Paternity test says he is. Now, I haven't met her yet, but I don't bear ill feelings toward her. I have a lot of love in my heart and if she feels overwhelmed, I'm willing to adopt the child and raise it as my own. The question is: where do I begin such a process?

Asking her would be a start. No adoption is going to take place if she does not want to..

Umm....you're right and that is my intention. However, I do not live in Virginia. I will be flying out for a few days in July. I was just wondering what agency to contact once I get there and what times of forms would be needed because we'd be on a tight time line to get things in order.

I have no intention of railroading this girl. I just want to have all bases covered when we meet here in a month.

If she concents, there isn't really a need to contact an agency, a private adoption can be handled through an attorney.

Best wishes,
R.
