I would like to plan a vacation to Canada next year. Do I need my ex's permission to take our daughter with me?

Yes you do, particularly since by the time you make your trip, passports may be required. (they are due to be required sometime in the next year or so) You definitely need the ex's signature to get a passport for your child.

To turn the question around - would you expect your ex to ask for your okay if he wanted to do the same?
