What is the name of your state?tx
I know that it is not legal for a green card holder to vote in presidential elections. I know someone who did in 2001 and now desparately trying to fix that blunder. He says when he came to the US someone asked him if he wanted to vote and he not knowing the voting laws, said yes. He received the voter registeration card and hence voted in 2001 elections. Since then he has not voted in any elections. His citizenship is also due and he wants to clear that honest mistake before applying for citizenship. What are the options for him to correct this mistake? Thanks

He needs to seek help of immigration lawyer ASAP, because what he did without intentions, made him "deportable".

There were, of course, no US presidential elections in 2001, the current President having been elected in 2000 (arguably elected, but nevertheless, it was in November 2000)
