My cousin is 24yrs old, has learning disabilities. Both parents have passed away. In May of this year he had a good job and was able to afford to live on his own. We helped him get an apartment. A month later he lost this job and went to a local oraganization that helps the mentally disabled. They gave him a job but, he is only making about $2.00 per hour!! brings home $160.00 every two weeks! They keep telling him he needs to sign over to a protective payee and they will help him with a job and let him stay in the program. Well, he hasn't been able to pay his rent or most of his bills or past bills and is seriously behind. Can they legally give him a job at this wage and not take over some care for his expenses? And, who is responsible for the back rent and other bills? They have given him food stamps and say they are going to get him evaluated for another job but it has been months! I became his protective payee so that he could still keep his job of $2.00 per hour and the little bit of assistance he is getting. This is in the state of Wisconsin. Any help you can give would be appreciated as I do not have any idea where to start!!
