To me this sounds completely crazy...
I have a friend who received a speeding ticket in Maryland. His fine was $70. He deliberately sent a check for $72. He claims that this way Maryland has to send him a check for the $2 overpayment and as long as he doesn't cash the check the ticket can't be closed. He says the points won't go on his driving record here in Virginia as long as the ticket is open. He has a lot of points on his record already and his insurance threatened to cancel him if he got anymore. I say the points can go on as soon as they process his payment, even though he overpaid.
Who's right?

My response:

You are. This is the oldest scam, and "wive's tale" in the book. All he has to do is call the Department of Motor Vehicles and ask. He'll also find out he was awarded the points.

This "scam" has been going around the Internet for years now. It's like all the other hoaxes that circulate. I can't believe anyone is dumb enough to fall for that stuff. Well, I guess if you're desperate like your friend, you'll believe anything.

There are ways like that, that can work. I myself was sentenced 45 community hours and $135 fine. On my court date, I faxed in the Comm. papers, and was supposed to mail the check for $135. This was in 1995. I never paid, and it is not or ever was on my record!!!

My response:

Yours is not an "Internet Scam or Hoax"; rather, you are merely taking a chance on whether or not a warrant for your arrest will be issued for nonpayment, that's all. Let me ask . . . when was your last traffic ticket issued to you? How do you know that a warrant hasn't been issued? Who checked the police records for you in order for you to know that "it is not or ever was on my record"?

I am the guy with the $135 never been payed.
I have had many tickets since, and even been in county for a week. They check before releasing you. Anyone can check for warrants merely by calling a police station in the county and tell them you want to clear your warrants, and they will list all your warrants in thier county and touching counties. Like I said, this was in 95. I am only 25 nowm, so you can imagine how many tickets Ive gotten. Besides out of 17 tickets I have received, Only 3 did I not beat in court. That was 1 of them!!!
