What is the name of your state? Virginia

My Father is a stroke victim. I have power of attorney but he is now refusing to go to the doctor or to take his medications. I think he is on a death march. What are my options to get him proper care, If he is refusing.

He has the right to refuse, sorry.

If you really feel he is incompetent to make life saving decisions you can petition the Courts for Guardianship.

Having said that it is very very difficult to then actually see to it they get that care. Because you will still be fighting them tooth and nail.

Good Luck been there.

Even those adjudicated as incompetent by the court have the right to refuse medical treatment. As long as they can do so, unfortunately, there's really not much one can do about it.

ark2076, if your father is having trouble swallowing and his medications can be crushed, crush the meds and mix them with applesauce. That will make it easier for him to take them. Should he have meds that cannot be crushed, ask his physician if there are other Rx's that can be crushed.

With the increase of elderly population, there now are physicians that make house calls again. This is something you may want to check into.

He is refusing to take his high blood medication, that he is able to swallow. I just want to know if he is refusing treatment and refusing to go to the doctor can i have him admitted because he is endangering himself.

No one who is conscious and able to refuse treatment or refuse medication can be forced to do so except a person who is psychotic and admitted to a psychiatric unit. Because your father is able to communicate what he does and does not want, no hospital, no nursing home, and no nurse at an assisted living facility will FORCE your father to take his medication or FORCE medical treatment on your father.

Your father has the RIGHT to refuse. This is not what you want to hear, but it is true.
