What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? New York

I live on long Island and I was pulled over a town away from my home for illegidlly making a left turn in a left hand lane and going over the median strip. i am certain i didn't touch the median strip. the cop asked me if I was calling him a liar. he asked form the regular stuff, i didn't have a current insurance card on me so he gave me a choice. Get arrested or have my vehicle impounded. I asked him what he could arrest me for. He called a towing company, had me get out of my car, then he went through all the papers I had in my glove box and on the seat. I told him he had no right to do that and he said it was his stuff now and his car. He told me to produce an insurance card, come to the police station and pay a 150.00 administrative fee, then pay 500.00 to get my car back
I've never had anything like this happen to me before, it was so far over the top - it was truly insane! I'm thinking of calling a local news channel or help me howard - something like that

he can go through the car to inventory items in it. don't like it? call your legislator. don't like the tow fees? call your legislator. don't like your ticket? tell it to the judge & when found guilty, tell it to your legislator.

You can comply with the law by making sure you have proof of insurance in your vehicle at all times.

Most states have "Financial Responsibility" laws that require drivers to have proof of current insurance on their vehicles at all times. No insurance means you aren't able to operate the vehicle on the streets, PERIOD.

If you are convicted of operating an uninsured motor vehicle or permitting another person to be operate your uninsured vehicle, your license will be revoked for at least one year. The same penalty applies if the Department of Motor Vehicles receives evidence that you were involved in an accident without being insured.

Some revocations require you to pay a civil penalty before your application can be accepted for a new license. This includes revocations for No Insurance or Uninsured Accident. These violations come with a $750 civil penalty.

The civil penalty is an additional monetary payment over the normal fine amount. NYS Vehicle and Traffic law 319 notes that being caught without insurance is a traffic infraction and upon conviction you may be fined not less than $150 or more than $1500 or may be imprisoned for not more than 15 days or both the fine and jail time.

So... your attitude got your car towed and you have a multitude of other penalties awaiting you. Have fun with that.
