What is the name of your state? WI

Hi, I would like to know what can i do in the following situation.... in legal terms.

I have (or i should say "had") lots of friends where i live and we use to hang out together. All the sudden they have started neglecting me. And i was curious about this whole thing and found out someone is telling wrong things about me to them, which are not true. What kind of legal action i take against that person who i telling all these things to my friends against me..

Thanks

None. You need to get some new friends.

Well, Kingscorpionus, there sort of IS a law against saying untrue things about people. It is called "slander". Slander, and libel, are types of communication which expose a person to hatred, ridicule or contempt, or which lowers them in the esteem of others, or causes them to be shunned, or injures them in their business or profession.

But there must be a proof of damages much greater than just the loss of some friendships (and these particular friends are probably not ones worth saving anyway) and there must be proof that slanderous words were, in fact, spoken (which is not always an easy proof). Plus, suing someone for slander takes a LOT of money and a LOT of time, and there is never any guarantee that the suit will be successful.

It's a lot less aggravation to find new friends, ones who won't believe lies told, than to attempt to "punish" old friends who have been too quick to turn on you. In other words, moburkes gave you great advice.
