I applied for a job and was denied due to my disability, despite doing the same work in the past. I met with a lawyer, and he wants to send a demand letter, and demand an amount far higher than I ever imagined getting from this.

I know each situation is different, but what's a reasonable amount/estimate/range for this?

I'm in CA. Thanks for your help.

Can you prove that you were denied an interview or didn't get the job because of your disability? Unless you have a witness or can prove the company has a history of refusing to interview/hire people with a disability, it'll be your word against the other person's in court.

It's obvious that your greed exceeds any outrage you could be expected to feel over the alleged discrimination.

What's going to happen is that the lawyer will demand x number of dollars, the company will tell him to do something anatomically impossible and any money that you do make will go to cover his fees.

Yes, they put it in writing.

What I truly want out of this is for this to never happen again. If it takes money, then so be it. If you have alternate suggestions, I'd be happy to hear them. I really don't even want the amount my lawyer wants to demand, I'd be happy for much less, which is why I'm asking what's a "normal" amount to ask for...?

The rejection letter had all the typical stuff: Thank you for applying, blah, blah, blah. Then it said the reason for not hiring me was because "we feel that our employees would not be able to communicate with a person with a hearing impairment"

I can talk and hear with hearing aids, just can't use the phone (not a requirement for this position). The interview was a phone interview through a relay service, so they probably assumed I'm fully deaf.
