Although I was actually born in New York City, my adoption was finalized in New Jersey. Where do I begin my search? Which state would have my records? And, how do I find out New Jersey's policies on releasing information? Thanks.

In New Jersey, confidential adoption records are available by court order
only. The Division of Youth and Family Services operates a registry for its
placements only. Those individuals may contact: Department of Human Services,
Division of Youth and Family Services, 1 South Montgomery Street, CN 717,
Trenton, New Jersey 08625. Telephone: (609) 633-3991

Most agencies will give up non-identifying information. That could be a start to at least get to know the situation. Also, here is a link to a great web site that has lots of information on searching.

www.adoption.com

Best of luck
