What is the name of your state?Virginia

Where I work they are telling employees to go and hand out coupons in the parade. We are there for 3 hours handing out coupons to parade watchers and walking in the parade which is around a mile. No one would volunteer because the temperature suppose to be in the 30s. So they told a couple of us that we had to go and do it when we asked if we would be paid the superviser of the store said no but we still have to do it. They say we have to do it but they refuse to pay it us for it. They say it considered volunteering work but the say we have no choice in doing it that we have to. We are hourly employees ranging from 20 to 40 hours a week. I am a cook and the other person is a manager in training. I make 5.30 a hour she makes $8/hour. Its a pizza resturant that makes less than 8,000 a week. Is it legal to make us go and work it without paying us for it? Thank you, Lewis

It is legal to make you do it, but they may not require you to do it unpaid. If it is mandatory, you must be paid for it.
