Pennsylvania- 29 years ago my mother had me and she was marriedto this man, who is not my dad. She cheated on her husband. When I was born she gave me her husbands name, even thoughhe was not my real dad. I knew who my dad was all my life but She would not give me his name, she told me that the law in 1972 if married and give birth the child got the name of the husband even if he's not the dad. Is that true? The last name I carry belongs to a man not my dad. I am looking up my family history but having a hard time due to this situation. Help me is my mother telling the truth or just scared that her husband will know that she cheated. He must be dumb I don't look anything like him. thanks for the time.

Not true but the law assumes a child born during marriage is the husband's unless otherwise known. So, you are a grown woman. Go do what you have to do but it sounds like you need more than legal help. It sounds like the man who is your mom's husband didn't treat you well. Because if he did treat you well, you wouldn't be looking elsewhere.
