I am submitting this for a friend who lives in Georgia, was interviewed for a job and subsequently hired for the position. The interview and hiring took place on-board a ship thats was in port in Loisiana. The company who hired him is based out of Houston Texas (they work with offshore oilriggs). He was fired without notice or given a reason as to why, which I understand is legal in Texas. What I am trying to find out is what states labor laws would have jurisdiction in this case? The lawyers for the Texas based company made the statement "Take us to Court" Could you please help me? Thank You

In what state was he actually working? That's the state whose laws govern 99 out of 100 times.

Didf he have any employment agreement or oral promises of employment? Unless he is in a state that does not honor the majority rule -- all employees are "employees at will" he's in trouble.
