What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? MI

I am writing this for someone without internet connection. Person hired in factory. Takes company physical and instructed to buy safety boots (steel toe). Person was told boots would be taken out of check.

Person works to Friday and around noon, gets called into HR. Because person had two dr appts scheduled was told that they were being let go because "they needed someone who would be here all the time." Person was agreeable and shook hands and left.

Employee was paid $300+ for time worked and nothing taken out for boot cost. Today (former) employee gets letter saying to send $169 for company physical and $149 for safety boots, as they were not employed 90 days by company. Can company charge employee for company physical? Boots? Boots were charged to company account as per normal procedure.

Letting someone go because they tell you they have two upcoming dr appts? This employee is a type I diabetic who wears an insulin pump and would be visible to employers.

Because he/she knew h/s was working, h/s could have call the doctor's office and tried to change the appointments.

As to who pays for what, that should be in writing so that if the person decides it's "unfair" that they pay for (fill in the blank), they can decline the job.

The internet is available through libraries and many businesses. Your friend has no excuse for not posting him or herself.

It is pretty common for companies (in states that don't prohibit it, which MI does not) to require newly hired employees who don't stay a certain period of time to repay the company for the pre-employment physical.

Did he sign anything at hire where he agreed to this?

As a second issue, did he discuss at any time reasonable accommodations under the ADA for his treatment/appts for his diabetes?
