NJ and PA. Husband has house in NJ which has never sold (he did rent it for 1 year, losing money) in NJ. We married 4 yrs ago. We live in my house in PA. We have filed separately since we got married but now husband would like us to file jointly but I am extremely reluctant due to his credit problems. Also, he does owe me 15k he "borrowed" from me a few months after we married, expecting to get it back before now. Waiting on house sale for that.
There is a lien on his NJ house and he has a 7k debt filed against him. We tried having a joint ckg acct when we first married and his debtors were able to get the money. I was unaware of any of his debt issues until after the marriage. Everything is totally separate right now. His credit score is 620 (not sure if that matters) and he is behind on his mortgage payment.
If I file jointly with him, will doing so add my S.S. (or anything else) to his debtors access or will I be liable for any of his financial issues? I contacted my accountant but he said I should contact a lawyer to find out.
