Heck - it ought to be posted in every workplace in the U.S. :)

2. . Myth: The First Amendment protects your ability to say what you want at work.

Fact: The First Amendment prevents the government from restricting your speech, but not a private employer. In most states, an employer can fire you for what you say at work, or even outside of work. (An exception to this is if you're organizing coworkers about wages or working conditions.)

Except some state give protection .... so its Fact & Fact & False

You're dead wrong; if you disagree, please do give us cites to the State statutes to which you refer.

But gee, if everyone would read this and believe it, what would we have to talk about?

Million and three times I have said it, people really believe these things, it's like Santa or the Tooth Fairy. And they'll get together and swap ignorance on this subject for hours at a time.

You are misinterpreting the CT law.

The CT law says, in essence, that an employer (and I agree that it includes private employers) cannot fire an employee for exercising their First Amendment rights. Where you're going wrong is in what those First Amendment rights consist of. The First Amendment does NOT give you carte blanche to say whatever you like about anyone. The First Amendment discusses what happens when you criticize THE GOVERNMENT. The CT law does not expand on that. And yes, I have read the actual law.

So what you have is a state law confirming a Federal law - put into employment law terms, you can't be fired because you criticize the government. NOTHING in the CT law says that you can't be fired for criticizing the employer or his policies. Or anything else, for that matter, unless it is protected by the First Amendment. Which really does not cover very much at all.

I read the thread. I read the law. The actual CT law. It relates to FIRST AMENDMENT issues - granted, first amendment issues that happen in the work place, but first amendment issues nonetheless. The law was originally implemented with regards to the display of the American flag. At the very least, it has to address a matter of public concern and not just the employee's personal interests. The Constitution of the United States and very specific areas of the state constitution are identified.
