If your former employer's opinion is that you are a bad driver, and if he has had people call in complaining about your driving, there is no law in any US state that is going to prohibit him from saying so.

ETA: I promise you that there was a reason. You may not know the reason; you may not agree with the reason, but there was a reason. It costs employers more to fire someone and hire someone else than it does to leave someone in place, so they're not going to fire for no reason at all.

But even if they did, that's still legal. In any at-will state (which is 49 of the 50 and includes Florida) you can be fired for any reason except one that is expressly prohibited by law. Even if they picked a name out of the hat or threw darts at a list of employees posted to the wall and fired the folks that the darts hit, that's not prohibited by law.

People calling and complaining of your driving is going to be a valid reason to fire you even if you are a gay, transgender, Muslum, yellow, woman, from Nigeria, over 40, who is not a citizen, who is pregnant, person who is just trying to be the best person he/she can be. I know many people fired with bad results in CA because of the bumper stickers that give a number and a "How am I driving?"

At will or covered under a union, you have a problem. Unless you think everyone is getting such calls and they are denying you employment because of one of the reasons above, I think it time to move on. If you will get UI, I'd shut up and accept my reality.

If under a union contract, the only thing I can think of is due process. That will only delay things if there are people calling in about your driving.
