I dont work as a server. But if I was, i would still refuse to serve an obviously pregnant woman a drink. Has nothing to do with the law - that's just my own personal view on the subject.
Good thing I'm not a server.

If I saw an obviously pregnant woman smoking, I would ask her to put it out. None of my business, but I would still say so.

And how would you know the woman was obviously pregnant? You could be extremely wrong and insulting.
You would deserve to be fired.

You are right, it would be none of your business.
You should really spend time taking stock on yourself and what you can do to help yourself...not judging people based on limited information.

Good luck in your future endeavors.

the server not selling the woman cigarettes due to her being pregnant....could that woman sue the store for discrimination? I mean they would not sell to her "because" she was pregnant????? Faith

I didn't expect my comments to be popular - but they are honest. I know it is not my business, but I personally would not be able to stand back and by my silence support a reckless disregard for these unborn kids. Perhaps I am too close to seeing the results of poor pre-natal care.

Those of you who disagree, at what point would you step in regarding a pregnant woman's behavior? What if you saw a pregnant woman smoking marijuana? Using cocaine? A different situation as these are illegal, but would you act?

I don't need anyone to agree, just expressing my opinion.

While working through college, I worked with a woman who was pregnant who kept on smoking. I asked her about it and she me told that having a low birth weight baby was just fine with her. How sad is that?

If you see a pregnant woman using illegal drugs, you can call the police because the drugs are illegal for everyone. Of course, I know pregnant women who were advised by their doctors to smoke pot (small amounts) because of severe "morning" sickness and the harm done to the baby from mom not being able to keep any food down was far worse then the potential harm from a little pot. But if I knew a pregnant woman was using coke or heroin, I'd try to get her some help too.

Other then that, it's no one's business how someone else treats her body. Even if you consider an unborn child to be a separate person (and I do not, generally speaking), it's still not YOUR child and therefore none of YOUR business. It's not your place to judge someone else unless you've gotten inside her head and lived her life for a while. Basically, get over yourself, you're not god.

Just another to join the moral police force. As just about everyone as said here, it's not your place to judge, decide or force someone to your way of thinking, morales or values. As ecmst12 put it "get over yourself"

Still wondering if what she did could be construed as discrimination.

Yes, Faith, it could, which is why I said that janimal's hypothetical practice could get her employer sued.

How do you know a woman is DEFINITELY pregnant? Do you pee test each woman that comes in?

Those of you who disagree, at what point would you step in regarding a pregnant woman's behavior?

Again, how do you know a woman is pregnant? Seriously. Tobacco and alcohol are legal. A woman who is smoking or drinking may not be pregnant but fat. Another woman you don't accuse of being pregnant could be almost nine months along. So unless you are going to pee test every woman (which would get into gender discrimination and a strict violation of rights) you are putting your own stereotypes into use.

What if you saw a pregnant woman smoking marijuana? Using cocaine? A different situation as these are illegal, but would you act?

Again -- prove that they are pregnant. And someone using illegal drugs -- well you should report them to the proper authorities. And if they are pregnant and a health care provider is aware or suspects drug abuse, when the child is born they can take action and have the child removed.

Pretty sad but that is her opinion. And your opinion is yours. And again, if you think you are going to stop me from purchasing beer or tobacco because I am seven months pregnant think again. I buy it but it doesn't mean I use it. And some doctors do not have a problem with a woman having a drink of wine once in a while during pregnancy. And if the doctor okays it who are you to refuse to serve her?

My OB/GYN actually said that I shouldn't try too hard to quit smoking because the stress of quitting would actually have more impact on the pregnancy than the smoking. He knew my history of having huge (9lbs at not quite full term) babies and said that lowering the birth weight shouldn't concern me at all.

I wouldn't. It is neither my business nor my responsibilty to dictate how another adult should behave. If the behavior she is engaging in is legal, I have no right to require her to stop.

I'll tell ya what... if the receptionist decides my a$$ is too big and blocks my access to the big ol can of popcorn that's sitting on her desk, I will be forced to take action, and it won't be pretty.

But if the popcorn is HER personal property then she has every legal right NOT to share with you. Not that it would be nice. But....
