Is this action legal? What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)?

I got a letter from a company telling me I had unclaimed property in the State of California. Turns out I did. I checked the website myself and got my check without giving these guys a dime.

I should have sent them a thank you note for the free information:D

Start by reading this, the california guide for unclaimed property investigators.

http://www.sco.ca.gov/Files-UPD/guide_investigator.pdf

Then get some good contracts. If you can get the property owner to sign a contract and their property gets returned to them directly they will still owe you your fee.

And finally, searching the database by entering names sure sounds like the painfully slow way to do it. Start by getting a list of unclaimed property and THEN try to find the people to go with the property.

There are people who do this as a business already. Perhaps you should consider working for one of them first and learning the trade before branching out on your own.

Nice, how much did you get? What was it exactly? If you don't mind saying. Did your family just lose track of this?

Exactly the same thing happened to me, too.
