What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? florida
my daughter had a medical condition. We had to outside of our local doctors to a different town to get the medical help she needs. They have excused her from her abscenses from the date the doctor saw her until present. they faxed a note from the doctors office directly to the school. The school is failing her and won't let her turn in the make up work that she has completed because they won't except the note. They won't call and verify the note with the doctor. She is a 4.0 student who has been accepted to FSU and USF. this could ruin her college chances which the guidance counselor told her she didn't care if it ruined her future or if she got into a college. She also wrote in writing to me that the school will only accept notes from local doctors. I believe this is a vilation of our civil rights. the school also called her into the office, which I and my daughter have disclosed some of her medical info, but tried to make her disclose all of the info when two people she didn't want to discuss it in front of were inthe room. Then they were harrassingher there with out a parent. I would like a letter sent or something sent to the school.

Specifically what civil rights of yours do you believe this violates? How many days of school did your daughter miss?

Your writing skills are so poor that I'm not sure how much your daughter told you in person and how much she told you over the telephone.

First of all, I find it hard to believe that the guidance counselor would tell your daughter that she "didn't care if it ruined her future or if she got into a college." This appeals to a "they're all out to get us" mentality.

No one on the forum(s) will send the school a letter. You need to hire an attorney, and you and your daughter need to give the attorney the facts in a clear, detailed and honest way so the attorney can give you the best possible advice.

And, since we just covered this already last week.....Your 4.0 GPA child can still fail by not meeting attendance standards. Verify in the student handbook the number of excused absences allowed per school year.

Beyond that--for example, for a student with a chronic illness--an IEP would need to be created to ensure your child meets the necessary standards to graduate.

Or perhaps a 504 plan. Depending on the situation you might chose one over the other. Hard to say not knowing the exact nature of the disability and the school system involved. There are lawyers who specailize in this.
