I live in Nebraska and am in the air force. A friend of mine is about to go to court over the custody of her daughter with her child's father. Me and her are discussing marriage in the future only due to living in different states as of now (she lives in Colorado). Can I adopt her child while living in another state and not being married yet? I don't want her to lose her child, even though im sure she wont anyways, but I want to be sure it doesn't happen. Will I be able to adopt and if I can, what sort of responsibilities would I owe other than the obvious responsibilities such as supporting the child financially?

Sigh. Please use the search function and read other threads. Your question has been asked and answered hundreds of times.

Let me try to answer anyway. You say that your "friend" - and let's face it, if you're discussing marriage she's a bit more than a "friend" - is about to go to court over custody? That indicates that the FATHER wants to be involved.

If that's the case there is virtually no chance of you adopting the child, married or not.

Let me ask you a question though. IF Dad somehow agreed - once you're married (because it won't happen without marriage) - to a stepparent adoption, are you prepared to pay child support if you and Mom divorce?

Are you okay with that?

If the father doesn't want you to adopt the kid, your not adopting the kid.
thats first.

Second of all, you aren't married, so your not even a step parent at this point. have you even met this child? how old is this child? WHY would you want to do this? there is nothing you can do for your "friend" by marrying her, and adopting her kid.

third of all, if all of the stars align for you to eventually adopt kiddo, which is seriously out of touch of reality ... when you divorce (which you will) YOU will have to pay for the child to be supported, commonly known as child support.

Unless HE gets custody

I wonder if MOM would be okay with OP getting custody and her having to pay child support?
