What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? CA

Just curious,

I know a couple who one of the two was diagnosed with Cancer. They are cosidering getting a divorce to protect the assets of the survivor.

Would that work?

Maybe. Or it may be considered fraudulent and come with CRIMINAL penalties.

Maybe THEY should be the one asking, or speaking with a lawyer. Do they know you are discussing their personal issue with the rest of the world

It is a crime to transfer assets to avoid paying debts. Depending on the situation.

There wouldn't be any transfer of assets. The spouse would still have all the debt that "they" accrued for sure.

There would be no fraud here, it's a real divorce.

All I'm thinking about is future cost of hospital bills that haven't come yet.

What I'm asking is can the hospital or collection agency, whatever come after an ex-spouse for hospital bills that were incurred by the sick ex-spouse after they were divorced? I don't see how it's possible but I know I'm not the first that have thought of it.

It's not your business.

It's certainly not your's but lets just assume for the sake of argument it's completely my business, my health and my surviving family.

Unless you are one of these two people, it is NOT your business. It is theirs. So you go and tell them that you've plastered their situation on the Internet. You apologize. And suggest that one = or both - of them come here and talk to us.

You've already been told several times. Not only can they possibly come after the ex-spouse's assets, but it is possible that criminal charges would apply.
