What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? Michigan

A friend of mine and his girlfriend is getting a two bedroom apartment. Their names will be on the lease and I asked not to be on the lease because I dont' want to commit to a 12 month lease so with that being said would I fall under the Subleasing category or a roommer/ month-to-month tennant? I also filled out an application because the apartments require a background check. We would be splitting the rent and utilities and just in case our utilities get way too high, they gave me a cap so I don't have to pay no more then the cap. Any advice on how to make an agreement on this?

Thank you.

Management told me that I had to fill out an application even if im not on the lease for background check purposes.

Is management in agreement that you can reside there not being on the lease ?

If so, how would you be listed upon approval?
