My employer eliminated my part-time position and gave me a termination date. then as I was leaving ask me to write a letter of resignation. is it legal for him to ask me for that letter if I didn't resign but was let go?

Is it legal? Maybe...but he did it in an attempt to stop you from claiming unemployment compensation. I hope you declined.
