Hi...
I'm in California and just today received a letter from a collection agency stating that I owe the city of Fresno $950, for an old DUI fine back in 1999. I did get a DUI back then, but went through all the hoops, paid court fee's and DUI class fee's and DMV fee's etc...etc.. Had my license back for quite some time now. This collection agency is trying to tell me that my license MAY be suspended if I don't resolve this. I have no court receipts of paid fines for 18 years ago...come on..who does? Does all this hold water, or is just a clever tactic to pick my pockets? I've never received anything about this from the courts OR the DMV.
Any advice for me out there??

It is a very clever of tactic to pick your pockets,
and, because it works. We have a entered into a world of advertisements, where there are an unimaginable number of ways for the slime and vermin of the earth, to spend the day doing nothing more than think up new ways separate us from our money.

now then....:o
Could someone please me down from this soap box?
(sorry bout that hijack.. )

Have you called city hall and the DMV and verified that there is no outstanding debt owed?
What did they say?

Collection agencies are notorious for buying outdated records from large retail outlets, city's and large hospitals, and they are not too particular as to the accuracy or correctness of these records.
They may send out a couple hundred thousand you MAY owe mailers and sit back see how many bites they get. What they are doing is trolling, trolling for suckers and what they are doing is not illegal. (Yet)
It's all about numbers.
I would send a letter to this 'collection agency' demanding they send you a statement(as I believe, required by law in Ca.) with the date/s and the amount/s owed. If it can be shown that they acting on inaccurate information were harassing you, you MAY be able to sue for damages.
If you make more work for them, they usually will stop bugging you.
Good luck.

Not disagreeing - would just like you to cite your source on this one...
