I live in South Carolina with my mom and her boyfriend. I am 25 years old. For the past few years my mom's boyfriend has been more of a daddy to me then my own father ever was. Is there anyway he can adopt me?

Did he express a wish to?

Yes, he may. Adult adoption is possible in South Carolina.

However, this would mean that your Mom will no longer be your Mom ...

... I guess that's not what you're wanting, right?

Because he is your mom's boyfriend and not her husband, if he were to adopt you he would be your only parent. Your mother's parental rights would be terminated. She would no longer be your mother - he would be your father and would be the only parent you had.

Now, that being said, is that what you want?

Well for your information I've known him 3 years but this man has done more for me than my real father ever has. He has earned the title daddy. It's not about just having a last name. It's about love and about giving me something I've never had, which is a father figure who loves me and cares for me.

What if I've been married and divorced? What about then?

That wouldn't change a thing.

Hon, we get it. We really do. But unless you are looking to sever yourself from your mother, adoption is not the way to go. You can accomplish the same thing by having your name changed in court. Family is who you make it.

Well...It seems as if you have a loving relationship. You don't need to be adopted (and have your mother become a legal stranger) to call Moms BF "daddy". He does not need to be (hopefully) LEGAL Father to call you "daughter.
