What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? Georgia
was fired by Walmart for defending myself against unruly customer that attacked me. But if a gunman comes in trying to shoot people I can defend myself then. Does not make a whole lot of sense.

I'm sorry to hear this happened to you. Please apply for unemployment as you seek new employment.

A gunman didn't come in trying to shoot people so what might have happened in that case is irrelevant.

They can fire you if the unruly customer had a gun as well.

I remember a number of cases where some corporate store billed the clerk for the stolen cash for handing over the money, instead of making the robber reach into the till for the cash (and risking being shot), claiming they were complicit.

In fact, it goes the other way. Walmart wants the employees not to intervene even if it means the crooks make off with the goods. People have been fired for trying to physically supress things.
