What is the name of your state?Texas

Hello, I live in a house right next to my neighborhood lake. Every Wednesday morning the landscaping company comes out to mow the lawn, etc. My city noise ordinance allows them to start work at 7am. However, my family and I work late afternoon jobs. We have been woken up every week and it's becoming a nuisance and really affecting our health. I know the landscapers can start work at 7am, but I looked over the city code of ordinance and it states "device may be used between the hours of 7:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m. and which device did not produce a sound exceeding 85 dB(A) when measured from the nearest residential property." I'm not sure if the machines they are using exceed 85 dB, so I'm not sure what to do. Should I call the police and have them come out with the sound intensity meter to measure the noise? Thanks.

I'd borrow a meter someplace to make an unofficial measure before I started calling police.....actually 85 db s not much more than a City street corner ...

The police aren't going to do that. You should contact your local town's code-enforcement department. With that said...it's once a week. It's not a constant nor long-lasting event. You would likely be better served by wearing earplugs Tuesday nights/Wednesday mornings.

One other thing - glancing at a few sites, it seems that, on average, a lawnmower produces about 90db at the mower. It is doubtful that this noise rises above 85db for you.

Or a diesel locomotive at 100 feet ;)

Invest some money in some heavy sound deadening draperies.

Basically, you can expect to get not much reaction, they aren't going to really care that you are day sleepers if the landscapers are following the letter of the law.

I forgot to mention they come on most Saturday mornings too. I'm sure if you have kids you could understand how frustrating it is to have your kids woken up on a weekend. Also they mow the lawn right next to my fence so hopefully when I measure it is over 85dB. Even if its 86dB, I'm going to do something about it.

Nothing is going to happen over this. Seriously, get earplugs.

As for kids and weekends...7am was always late for them. If they didn't get up before 7am, they were probably sick.

Except teens. Though they can sleep through a freight train outside their window. Besides - they should be up doing their chores. ;)

And ITA that little will come of this. Earplugs will be easier and cheaper to obtain (they sell them by the box) than getting hold of a noise meter.

I could set off an M-80 in my daughters room and he wouldn't wake up. M-F she is awake at 6 and gone by 6:45....weekends I let her sleep till done.

No. No I don't understand. My kid would sleep through a rooster crowing in her bedroom. (As a joke I brought one in there one morning.)

Would you prefer that they not mow the lawn by your fence at all?

Don’t know what kind of kids you have but most kids I know need to catch up on sleep during the weekends. Mine’s in high school btw.
