What is the name of your state?

MD/VA

I filed in both states via taxact dot com that I have used with success for over a decade. Need someone to give it a reality check. It's very simple return. I have 1 dependent who lives full time with me.
I moved from VA to MD on 2/27/2018 and live there the rest of the 2018 year.
I filed head of household. I am single, not married or anything. Just me and my dependent minor child whom I am claiming.

I am not sure why I have to pay some much to MD and nothing to VA, something to do with the W4 exemptions? I don't recall having to pay that much to MD before.

My gross is 114,506.
VA part time wages: 18,712. State income tax 986.44
MD part time wages: 95,795 State income tax 5389.23

Here is the taxact summary for both states:

Well, it is impossible to tell given just the summaries. Your tax for the amount of apportioned income on the MD side looks about right (top bracket of 4.75 plus the local supplement). That means you were likely under-withheld. What did you put down on the W4? It might also be that the partial year prorations messed up the withholding calculations.

One thing that I noticed was the VA summary properly mentioned "part year resident" but the MD summary did not. So, I see a potential error there. It should be part year for both states. It does look like the VA income was deducted out, so that might not be the issue.

The headings on the summary probably are because Virginia has a dedicated part year form (760PY). MD just does the partial year on the normal form (502) with a bunch of prorations and deductions for the out of state stuff. As you notice, it does seem to subtract out the Virginia income. Also, the back of the envelope calculation makes the total tax look about right (don't know what the piggyback is without knowing which county he's in).

Montgomery county.

I think my employer did a W4 forum - and messed up the withholding calculations. They asked me to do a long time ago, I never did and wonder if they just submitted a W4 by themselves. Meaning I ended up underwitheld. That's the most logical explanation.
