Ok lets start from the beginning. Im a 20 year old girl.
My boyfriend I met last year, had a heart attack one month before I met him. He is a student here from Bulgaria. He was running to the bus first day of classes and colapsed. He was airlifted to Albany Medical Center..the fun begins..
He has an ICD implanted (pacemaker) right after I meet him, (a month after he had the heart attack) he gets a letter from Albany Med saying his pacemaker is being recalled..
he goes back, and has it replaced, leaving the hopsital (same day surgery) he colapses because his blood pressure significantly drops. The doctors monitored his pressure while he was laying down, its common sense when you stand up, it will drop, but they failed to monitor it while he was elavated and as a consequence of thier brilliance, he passes out. We got back to the ER and he is monitored much more closely this time and after a few hours he is sent home.
Ok so 10 days later he goes back, and doctors see a drainage hole not closing. Hey they bandage him up and send us home..
3 weeks later he has severe pain in his chest, cant move his arm..wakes up the next morning to see his Medtronic ( I could actually read the brand name) sticking out of his chest about 1/4 of an inch..Due to the hole left by the doctors the pacemaker had pushed its way out of his chest..
because of infection. We rush him back to Albany Med, where he undergoes immediate emergancy surgery where they remove the device and a significant amount of tissue and muscle destryed by the infection. A 3rd pacemaker is now implanted on thr right side of his chest (as oppsed to the last 2 on the left side) he is closely monitored by desease and infection controle doctors over the next 2 weeks. he is than sent home with me and my family, seeing he has none here being an international student. week later he faints and we rush back to Albany Med. This time to find out his doctors over looked his medical prescription history and prescribed him an additional dose of Lopressor (a heart rate drug) and they failed to realize last time he was there for the infection that he was allready ON Lopressor. This medication slows the heart rate to a regular beat, double that and your not gunna do to well. So here he is a 20 year old boy, first year and another country, no family, attending college supporting himself, and thousands of dollars in debt due to the #1 leading Heart Center on the East Coast. Is it me or
does this seem a little extreme for a 20 year old kid to be dealing with by himself?! Weve contacted all those crappy TV lawyers who advertise free suits untill you win, but hes been turned down so many times, hes given up and thats why Im writing. He doesnt deserve to be pounded day after day with final notices from Albany med for $50,000-70,000 bills each day!! Any advice????

State: NY
September of 1999, Had cardiac arrest, heart stopped 3 times, was resesitated on scene by paramedics, and than flown to Albany Medical Center.
Pacemaker(ICD) device implanted.
One month later receives letter from Albany medical Center that his model of ICD is defective.
Goes back to have it replaced, and same day surgery..
colpses on his way out from low blood pressure. doctors were to quick to let him leave, not monitoring his blood pressure properly.
Month later has check up -Drainage hole noted..sent home, nothing done.
Few weeks later he wakes to find a hole the size of a Nickel
on the scar and the pacemaker 1/4 of an inch out. Wires and the device itslef were visible, clearly.
We (My mother and I) rush him back to AMC where they preform
emergency surgery, remove device, tissue and muscle from chest.
Few weeks after discharge passes out due to double doses of Lopressor, rushed back to AMC and doctors took him off the additional Lopressor immediatelly, and couldn't figure out how he was prescribed it.
Medicade covers emergancy only, for Non US Citizens-which he is a student here from Bulgaria.
which the doctors failed to see was allready on it

Great, I'm glad to hear that something is happening...

Let him know that I'm pulling for him...

Sickness Sucks! And being on the outside, seemingly helpless, is even worse. You and I both have no legal say in what happens to the men in our lives. That really is hard.
