I have a question:
First, let me explain.

My family owns a fairly large business with a small retail store next to it. In front of this retail store are five parking spaces one being handicap. The retail store happens to be a coffee shop and all of the local cops hang out at it daily. I have maybe seen one legit handicap person park in that spot in the past two years. Here I come, in a rush, just going to run in and out, park in the handicap spot. Now, one of the local cops, that is friends with my father, knows who I am, and knows my car, writes me a $300 parking ticket!!

This is not a city spot. It's on my family’s private property. Furthermore, he could have beeped me on the cell and I would have moved it.

Can he give me this ticket legally???

a: Yes.

Gee its nice to know there is only one legit handicapped person in Massachusets

Since there was no parking except for that space open, the officer had his duty... and who said you get off because you are friends with him. Oy

Okay, so if we go on the premise you know the police officers in your city/county, then if you shoot at someone, they should just forget about it and let you go on your way? I realize this is not a shooting, but what you have done is illegal. You should be held to the same laws as the rest of us. You aren't special because you know them. I know several Leutenants in my city, but I won't abuse that by assuming they will allow me to do things illegally.

Private property means nothing. There are fines and those fines are posted. Even if they aren't, if the spot is designated for the handicapped, then that is what it is for. DO NOT assume someone is not handicapped because you can't see the disability. There are people with asthma, heart disease, nerve damage, and it is not visible. How dare you assume they are fine just because you can't see what is wrong. Just because they don't have a cane, crutches, a wheelchair, etc., does not mean a thing!

You deserve the ticket, so pay it and be quiet!

Yes, the ticket is legal and yes, you're lucky it wasn't me. I would have put a boot in your ass THEN called the police.

Just ask the woman who sat in jail over Easter weekend because she though I was playing.

Whoa, Abaga, hold on a second. I would totally agree with your reaction if that was what the original poster meant. But perhaps he simply meant that he has only seen one person with legitimate handicapped plates/or placards use that spot in the last several years (not one legitimately handicapped person out of the dozens with plates or placards, which is what you assume he meant) Either way, the original poster does have to pay the fine even though it is private property. State laws in all states clearly give police the right to enforce handicapped parking rules on public and private property alike. But Abaga, why don't you just stop and think for just a minute before you respond to a post with an unwarrented tirade.

Could the disabled person in need of that spot have "just beeped you?" Should that person HAVE to beep you in order to park? I think not.

In addition to the fines (which aren't nearly high enough!) anyone who doesn't respect handicap parking spots should get to take someone in a wheelchair out to dinner after it snows. Try it ONCE and you'll never complain again. That extra couple of feet really make a difference when you're shoving through slush.

So with your logic, if a handicapped person had needed to park in the ONE designated space(maybe someone tried but couldn't because your car was there!!), he/she would have had to find a cop that knows you and your car and forced the cop to "beep" you?????????
COME ON, what planet are you living on? Stop violating traffic laws and making life even more difficult for handicapped people and you wont have to worry about getting ANY fines. It's so simple even a little kid could figure it out.
