What is the name of your state? FL

OK..I am not looking for a potential suit...I just want to know if anyone here can define Actinobacter Baumanii for me in layman's terms?

Background:

Grandfather has had multiple heart attacks. Had double-bypass and valve replacement surgery approximately two and a half months ago.

About six weeks after surgery, he was doing fine ( Lucid, sitting up, and walking a few steps) and was then transferred to a rehabilitative hospital.

He was doing fine until yesterday. My Grandma went in and he was laying in his own waste, some of which was dried on...and his heart rate was at about 60.

She raised hell..and when I arrived (3 hr drive), I was also given the run-around.

I had to get my Grandma out of there and get her something to eat (diabetic). And when we returned about an hour or so later..My Grandpa was in seclusion.

I asked why..and they said that there was an outbreak within the facility of Actinobacter Baumanii. Doctor said it is a bacterial infection that is derived from Iran. And currently there are about 20 patients infected. The doctor did say not to worry, there is a cure, but it will take a few weeks.:(

I have utilized several search engines..and still can not come up with a layman's definition of what this infection(?) does, or possible ways it could affect my Grandpa's recovery.

It seems as though you must be a molecular biologist in order to understand the majority of any of the results from Google(etc). The only real thing I can understand is that is is indeed a bacterial infection.

Does any one have a clue what this Actinobacter Baumanii. is or how it may affect him?

Any other input as far as this situation is concerned is welcome.:)

My response:

Then find a medical site that can explain it to you. This is a legal site.

IAAL

*Sigh*

I tried.

Hell, Google only has a page and a half on it...all in medical terms. Ask.com only has two links. Other search engines have between 2-10 links.....all in medical terms that I can not understand.

Seems as though this is a rare communicable infection.

I just thought maybe someone here would know...or have resources I don't have available to me, that might help.:o

Hey, what happenend to "IAAL-26"?

send a pm to rmet. I haven't seen her on the site lately but she will probably be able to give you the answers you seek if you can reach her.

She is/was a forensic psychologist right?...Not a medical doctor?

Either which way...maybe she has some resources that can provide the answers I need.

Thanks. ;-)

No she is not a doc. You sound like you doubt her. You will be very surprised at the info she can (and presumably will ) give you.

No, I don't doubt her...LOL

I don't know...It just seems to be such a rare infection. (with the lack of information on the web)

Hell, if Google only has a page and a half about it...all in medical/scientific terms...It just makes me not really confident that I will get an answer.:(

I know that rmet has her 'ways'...I hope that she can come through for me.;)

acinetobacter baumannii

The spelling is correct.

Hope this helps Sticky, it starts as a wound infection.

Best wishes for a great recovery for your Grandpa. My Poppop just passed a year ago at the age of 98, and he was still taking care of himself at that age.

Grandpas are so special, and I'm sorry to hear of his illness.

The spelling I gave was the one I received from the nurse. (Her interpretation of the doctor's handwriting..I suppose)

Several different versions came up while "Googling"...Honestly, I don't know.

But, It sounds like it could possibly be...seeing as how a quick search refers to the area of Iraq (I believe Iran is a neighbor..or maybe the nurse meant Iraq...Like I said..I received the run-around)..and military personnel.

It definitely comes closer...Like I said, most of the scientific/biological/physician language I do not understand, unfortunately:(

But yes, This may be it.

Thanks.:)

Looks like Shay is familiar with this. It's all Greek to me. Actually it's Latin to me but I don't understand that either.
