Sticky, are you sure you have the correct spelling? I was cruising the net and came up with this name.

acinetobacter baumannii

The spelling is correct.

Hope this helps Sticky, it starts as a wound infection.

Best wishes for a great recovery for your Grandpa. My Poppop just passed a year ago at the age of 98, and he was still taking care of himself at that age.

Grandpas are so special, and I'm sorry to hear of his illness.

Thanks Shay:) ..It will take some time for me to work through the site you provided.

I read great...but unfortunately my comprehension is slow sometimes, especially when the verbiage is something I am not familiar with/do not use frequently. :(

Thanks for your wishes....although they kinda put me on edge. He will get through this...right?

Part of me understands the "outbreak"....The other part of me is outraged!..

But I am way too emotionally involved.

Thank you for your thoughts:)

Just got off the phone with my Mom....Who just got done with the talking to the Doc.

It seems like your link, Shay, might be right on the money.

As it is not a rare disease/infection....It is just NEW! (hence the limited internet exposure)
And is not air-born, but yet commutes by interaction.

The Doctors and Nurses are maintaining that this bacteria can remain active outside the body (on clothes, skin..etc) for at LEAST 20 days.

Brought over by our troops working in the Middle East.

This may be the first time of hearing about it....I do not think it will be the last time!

I just hope my Grandpa survives it.

I see my Aide de Camp Shay accomodated your request in my absence.

I can understand your concern and it is also understandable that they have put your grandfather in isolation. It is very important that since your grandmother has diabetes that she be watched carefully since this is an opportunistic infection so she has a greater risk. It would be wise for her to be tested for the infection, also make sure your grandfather's infeciton is reported to the CDC. Is/was your grandfather in a VA hospital or exposed to OIF veterans?

Thanks for responding rmet:)

My grandpa is not a veteran..Nor has he ever been in the military.

I am assuming that someone who fits this "bill" was in contact (or a nurse worked with someone who fit the "bill") with my Grandpa.

And additionally was in contact...without washing/sterilizing their equipment/body before coming in contact with others.

This is not an "air-born" bacteria.....at least not as far as I have read.

It has been said that this bacteria tends to focus on those who are immunosuppressed.

Both my Mom and my Grandma fit the 'bill'. (I believe my Grandpa goes without saying)

They refused to test them....Until two weeks have passed (since yesterday).:(

Perhaps this infection is the WMD we all feared, it sure in incedious. I will steer clear of my son when he returns from Iraq until he gets tested. Call the CDC and see what they say re testing for your grandparents?

LOL...WMD=Weapons of Mass Destruction?....I think not.:rolleyes:

At the least a little warning....Or Hmmmm....maybe even a valid disease that just comes from that country?

Sounds like a drug resistent bacteria which originated in Iraq and was brought here by soldiers who were treated there and then transported here. I only read the beginning of the link though. I don't think it's dramatically different then other similar "superbugs" but if there's a treatment, that's definitely a good sign. I'll try to read more later.

One of the WMD's they were woried about was biological warfare, such as Anthrax, remember all the problems after Desert Storm? Consider how Measles and other communicatable diseases nearly wiped out the Native American population who had not been exposed until Europeans began trading with them? Or how TB is still a threat in some parts of the world? What better way than to pass on an old disease that was isolated, to a population to a stressed population (soldiers) by helping, in good faith, the very people giving them the disease? This is harder to detect than letter bombs.

Sorry for the delay...Had to get to bed to go to work today;)

Yes, I understood that also. My main concern is a heart patient (my Grandpa) being infected with it. ( and why, or how, he was subjected to it)

Yes, I understand....and in all fairness, I must apologize.

My emotions are all over the place...and unfortunately...it is easier to be sarcastic to people online.:(

The doctors told me that this particular infection targets immunosuppressed people..and those that are not..will never be victim.

Currently, they have my Grandpa on high dose antibiotics...and says he will be fine in a couple weeks. (second hand info from my Mom...I had to go back to work)

The more I think about it ...the more I question the facility that he is in. It is not air-born...it is communicable through touch.

I don't know....*sigh*

But he may have contracted before he got there or from interaction with someone inadvertantly. WHat about your grandmother, she is at risk also.

And so is my Mom.

My Mother went up there with a very serious chest cold.

I asked about that...and my Mom said the doctor told them..If they do not recover in a couple weeks...Then they will test them.

I am currently pulling my hair out from both sides of my head....:o
