I was granted political asylum in May of 1996. In May of 1998, I applied for an Adjustment of Status in order to get a green card. I had my interview in October of 1999 and I was not part of the 10,000 asylees that were approved for green card October of 2000. All the INS says is to check with them next year.

Here is my concern: I am getting married next year and my fiance is not a U.S. citizen. I know I have to have had a green card for 5 years before I am eligible for applying for U.S. citizenship. I thus have two questions:
1. Will my green card be dated from the year I will be granted the green (say 2001 or 2002), the year I applied for a green card (1998) or the year I was granted political asylum (1996)?
2. When I am applying for U.S. citizenship, can I also sponsor my wife at the same or must I wait to get U.S. citizenship first?

Thank you for your time.

I am a law school graduate. What I offer is mere information, not to be construed as forming an attorney client relationship.

For this complicated situation, you need to find an immigration attorney with a huge amount of experience to give you the specific details you seek. Perhaps the attorney can help you solve the complicated process?

To find one, try attorneypages.com OR call your state bar association and ask for lawyer referral.
