I would check to see if the grandparents might still be able to maintain visitation since this is a step-parent adoption. I've seen that this is possible in some states - not sure about California. In this case, it might best be court ordered if stepdad cuts the child off. In any case, it looks at the "best interest" of the child and if there has been a continued presence in the child's life.
