What is the name of your state? Kansas

Ending a 15 year marriage in which I was only able to work less than six months during the entire marriage. I am a certified EMT. I was diagnosed with degenerative disc disease and arthritis in my spine and my Dr. told me that I could no longer work due to the severity of the pain and danger of further spinal damage and told me to apply for disability. Disability denied my application due to my not having enough work credits. So, I became a stay at home mom to our 6 children. How will my disability effect the amount and duration of any alimony payments that my husband is ordered to pay? Dr. says that I am unable to work but disabilty says that I don't have enough work credits to go on disability.

Six children? What the hell were you trying to do - - populate your town?

It's no damn wonder you have back problems!

Can anyone with an intelligent response help answer my question, please?

No. But, there's a small town in southern Texas that needs a few more people. Can you help?

You have a bigger problem than just alimony. If you don't have enough credit to get disability, you also don't have enough credits to get retirement benefits. Therefore you are going to have to find some way to bring in an income....perhaps a work from home opportunity..

Being disabled will certainly effect alimony....but that doesn't make your long term problem go away.

Surely there are other employment options besides EMT that you could have learned or pursued in all this time.

I know someone who lost their speech ability because of brain surgery, and instead of NOT working because they were disabled from the career they knew, they immediately after the recouperation period, went and started learning a NEW career at age 49 (as a real estate appraiser) that did not depend upon a great deal of verbal communication. I know someone else who has very bad disc problems, with arthritus (she is bone on bone in her lower spine and first learned to do this at age 58) and she works for a greeting card company servicing their POS displays in three nearby stores using a computerized inventory reader. Surely there are employment options that have no greater stress on your spline than everyday living brings.

Thanks for lowering your voice. I presume you are talking to me.

I'm sure OP can find SSDI rules on their own just fine.

Congratulations on finding the cap key.

I for one congratulate you on your family, whether you gave birth to all of them or not. Had four myself. Hope the older ones are helping! God bless. ;)

So what if something happens to him? What if he dies, or becomes disabled himself? You cannot live the rest of your life depending on him to take care of you financially. I have degenerative disc disease and arthritis and my husband has scoliosis and polymyositis. We both work full time. You will need to find some way to take care of yourself, because counting on an ex husband is not the road you want to take.
