Sure, But!

If you mean Chapter 13, sure. If you are being harassed and don't want to put up with it any longer. Or calls to work are threatening your employment, or they are about to file suit, etc.

But, if you file Ch. 7 on that amount; you are really wasting a valuable protection that you may need in the future because of some catastrophic event, such as, major medical bills!

Can't you work with your creditors, (in writing), to avoid BK altogether?

Well, actually it's closer to $6000.
I am maxed out, there is nothing to work with..

There are no minimum debt requirements to file for bankruptcy. If you have no disposable income left over to pay your creditors and no assets to protect, then CH 7 is likely.

$6K isn't much, are you certain you have no other options ?

How old are these bills ? How long since you last paid the original creditors ? Are these credit card bills, student loans .. what kind of debt ??
