What is the name of your state? New York. I have a Providian charge card that had a $400 line. Last activity was April 1999. Asset Accept has the account now and the balance is $1800. I have tried to settle with them and they won't accept. I have asked for statements showing all service charges and interest rate, they won't send me anything. I was just on the phone and a supervisor was rude and hung up on me when I asked again for something in writing. How can I get this off my credit report? When they call they harrass me. How long can they keep adding to this bill?

Standard answer on expired SOL and/or validation and/or dispute letters.

SOL
http://www.bcsalliance.com/y_debt_sol.html

http://www.fair-debt-collection.com/Disputing_Collections/SoL-dispute-letter.html

Validation letter samples you can get at :
www.creditinfocenter.com
and www.creditboards.com

Disputes: You can write a letter of dispute to the three credit reporting agencies.

Go this website to find instructions and samples for how to dispute: http://www.creditinfocenter.com/creditreports/

Sometimes errors are easy to remove and sometimes they stick like glue. It is inexpensive to try and not difficult.

re:

Listen to me. Cancle the card. take out a bank loan and pay off the card. Providian stuck me bad. I went from 0% apr to 25% after a year because I missed some very very very small print. It ends up all your minimum payments barely cover is the monthly interest. Just go to your bank, take out 1800 or 2000 and pay off the card. You'll save money doing this with just interest alone. Loan interest arent' that high and it'll pay off quickly before you even know it.
oh yeah, and something i learned. Don't give them your phone number... they aren't going to call me. lol

It's been since 1999 and I tried to settle. I won't pay $1800 for a $400 debt.
There are laws. That's just giving in to them. They closed it in 1999 at around $550 and the collection agency took it over and has charged it up higher. And they won't give me anything in writing explaining what $1400 is for. It's not killing me credit wise. Everything else is paid off or on time for the past 5 years.

SOL in NY is 6 years, you're almost to the expiration of the SOL, which would be the end of May.

ASSet won't repsond to your verbal requests, you need to send them a debt validation letter, phone is useless with these people. You can find info on validation letters at www.creditinfocenter.com, along with some sample letters.
