What is the name of your state? ct

hi. i'm an f1 student doing part-time work where i study. i'm limited 14 hours work each week however i know i can do as much as 20 hours as law permits. i wish to seek addtl job opportunities (outside campus preferably) but my supervisor tells me i can't use my social security number elsewhere. he says it is only good for employment with the school, for the particular assignment i have now. he warns that should i try to find employment using this ss number, it will be confiscated by uscis.

this part-time work actually doesn't pay for my tuition and fees but i believe i can make better use of time, especially so summer is coming. my grades are all ok. please advise.

Your 20 hours per week are limite to on campus employment. You should check with your foreign student advisor's office to get additional information regarding your specific situation.

Please let me know if you have any additional questions or how I can be of further assistance to you in this matter.

thanks, atty. lana.

what do i do to be able to work off-campus instead? the int'l student advisor mentions that i may apply for ead based on economic hardship but there's really no guarantee if i can get approved. the ead will allow me to work outside campus but again, for no more than 20/hours per week while i'm registered. what about summer?

if i stick to my current part-time work at school (14 hours), will be possible that i seek another employer (for 6 hours/week work) within campus so i maximize the allotted 20 hours?

pls. confirm.

Whatever you do, do NOT get a job off campus without prior USCIS approval. Your advisor is right, - if you have F-1 you can only work off campus with USCIS approval based on you proving economic hardship.
If you get a job off campus now - USCIS will find out sooner or later - and will likely revoke your F-1 and send you home (read the conditions of F-1 visa).
See if you can get a summer job on campus. I went to college in the US on a F-1 visa and was able to work 40 hours during the breaks. During the semester however a max of 20. You should be able to work 40 hours a week during breaks also (of course if you find a job :)). Ask your international student advisor, and check the USCIS website.

Oops, this post wasn't directed to me was it? Ms. Lana probably knows more than I do, so listen to her :) I'm just telling you what I know from experience, hope it's helpful.

thanks FLmommy. i appreciate that very much. i'm sure your inputs are useful.

my supervisor knows i need more hours but she couldn't commit anything about allowing me to work more hours by summer time. i find that this is the case because they had hired a full-time employee. the int'l student advisor somehow discourages me from applying for ead as it could turn out less worthwhile for me in terms of effort and the time it takes for everything to be approved (their last case took 5 months!).

i'm not going to give up this 14-hour work i have now but i'm just wondering what options i can take to be able to work the maximum possible hours during the summertime (40 hrs?, i won't register for classes) and the following regular school terms (20 hrs).

the only option you have to max your working hours up to 20 during the semester and up to 40 during vacation time is to find a job ON-CAMPUS... I'm sorry to say but that is the only place you are allowed to find work while here on a F-1 visa.
