What is the name of your state? California
What if any obligation does a bank have to explain the legalities of opening a joint bank account?

They can't possibly go into every single possibility of what "might" happen. They should have explained you both have access and equal liability. But, even if they didn't, I doubt that would be enough to do anything about it.

What didn't you understand about a joint account?

I agree with cmorris, and I would go one further and say that the bank has NO LIABILITY about what may happen. They do not dig into your personal life to find out if you are opening an account with a spouse, girl/boy friend, parent, sibling, friend, etc. You can open an account with anyone you chose. They are not going to monitor your relationship and warn you that your brother might steal your money.

Their only responsibility is to inform you of banking rules, service charges, and other things that are in the disclosures you received when you opened the account. Anything else is a personal matter between you and the person you opened an account with.

California. My understanding of joint bank accounts was the information verbally given to me when I (We) opened the account. Which was basically that we were both there to open the account and we both needed to be there to close the account The idiot reference really applies to me for I should have had some kind of written proof from the bank not verbal. There is a book entiltled Facts About Personal Account Programs. This book was not given to us when we opened the account. I didn't even know this book existed until my fiance at that time closed our joint account and transfered the money into his own account at the same branch. This account was set up for us to buy a home. Every cent I had was in that account which was over 20,000.00 I am not telling you all this to blame the bank for my stupidity. I'm just trying to tell you my story. One minute I have a future the next without my knowledge or concent I have nothing. I am not even allowed to ask any questions about his account because that would be an invasion of his privacy. And this is all legal. He walked away with my life savings and as far as I'm concerned Bank Of America showed him how to do it. The money was still in their bank and I feel that was as far as their concern went. When your life savings is at stake you are the idiot if you dont protect it. The book explaining about personal accounts and the banks liability was given to me months later by the branch manager when I was finally allowed to speak with him.Nothing was done nothing could be done. What is wrong with this picture? Signed The Idiot.
