Hello, I am a 28 year old who has managed to accrue about $38,000 in
credit card debt. I was living with my parents and making my payments
on time. But a year ago I moved into an apartment. My roommate had
financial problems and could not pay his full half and I relied on my credit
cards to cover expenses. This is why my debt is at the level it is now.
In the past months roommate help went from some to none and I am
solely responsible for rent, utilities, etc.. I have not made c.c. payments
in about three months. I bring home about $1060 after taxes (one full-
time and one part-time job).
I don't believe I qualify for bankruptcy. I have recent large cash
advances. ($1200 from two of five credit cards in October 2004 and $200
from another in December). Also my roommate stole one credit card in
December. Before I reported the card as stolen $800 was charged and
withdrawn (PIN written on card). I did not want to press charges and
told the credit card company would cover the charges and asked the
theft case be dropped. I'm afraid if filed for bankruptcy the credit card
company would be suspicious after that incident and contest.
I would like to pay off my debt. I am in the process of looking for
another part-time job. But the c.c. companies say if payments aren't
recieved within a few weeks, I could face legal action. I'm still barely
getting by even though I'm not paying the credit cards. How am I going
to make it if my wages are garnished. Collectors keep calling my job
asking me when is my next payment and I don't know what to tell them.
I've looked into debt consolidation and debt settlement programs but
the monthly payments are too high for me.
Any advice or support would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
